St. Matthew
He was one of the four Gospel makers. His main emblem is an angel, possibly holding a pen, with bags of money at his feet. Originally a tax gatherer he was called to be an Apostle by Jesus Christ.
St. Chad
St Chad was the first bishop of Mercia and Lindsey
at Lichfield. He was the brother of Cedd,
whom he succeeded as Abbot of Lastingham,
North Yorkshire, and a disciple of Aidan who sent him
to Ireland as part of his education.
He died on March 2nd 672
HISTORY: The history of worship at St. Matthew's begins in 1855 with the population explosion caused by the Industrial Revolution. The first church school building opened in 1861.

For fourteen years, St. Matthew's Centre, a parish shop, provided cheap, good quality clothes for setting up home and raised funds for the church until the new commercial developments started in the 1990s.
In the middle of all the buildings the grass and trees in St. Matthew's grounds provide a green oasis.
The congregation today still reflects the people of the area with the Caribbean, Asia and other parts of the world represented alongside people coming from other parts of the United Kingdom into the new housing. Young and old, all blend together in harmony.
